What is SOC2?

SOC 2 is an auditing framewrok designed to ensure that service providers securely manage data to protect the interests of your organization.. Developed by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), SOC 2 defines criteria for managing customer data based on five “Trust Service Principles”

  • Security: The system is protected against unauthorized access-, both physical and logical – to safeguard data and systems.
  • Availability: The system is available for operation and use as agreed upon, ensuring it meets performance and uptime commitments.
  • Processing integrity: System processing is complete, accurate, timely, and authorized to ensure reliable operations.
  • Confidentiality: Information designated as confidential is protected in accordance with commitments or agreements, preventing unauthorized disclosure.
  • Type of SOC2 Reports

SOC 2 reports come in two types, depending on the depth and time frame of the evaluation:

  • Type I: Assesses whether the necessary security controls and procedures are designed and implemented at a specific point in time. It provides a snapshot of the organization’s control environment on a given date.
  • Type II: Goes further by evaluating not only the design of controls, but also their operating effectiveness over a defined period of time — typically a minimum of six months. This report demonstrates how consistently and reliably the controls are followed in day-to-day operations.
